Alopecia Barbae, medically known as beard loss, refers to the condition of beard hair falling out or causing bald spots in the beard area. Beard loss due to Alopecia Barbae typically occurs in small patches, which can be disturbing both in terms of physical appearance and psychologically.

Why Does the Beard Fall Out?

The exact cause of beard loss in men is not well understood. There are various potential reasons for beard or mustache hair loss. Psychological issues, skin conditions, and hormonal changes can lead to patchy beard loss or overall hair loss in the beard and mustache areas.

What Causes Beard Loss?

The causes of beard loss can be similar to those of hair loss in men. In addition to genetic factors, psychological issues or external causes may also lead to beard loss.

Where Are the Hair Follicles Taken From for Beard Transplants?

For beard or mustache transplants, healthy and permanent hair follicles are taken as needed and transplanted into the mustache area. A free mustache analysis is done to determine the number of follicles required, and typically between 400-800 follicles are transplanted. There is no scarring in the donor area, and the region where the follicles are taken heals quickly.

How Long Does a Beard Transplant Take?

Beard transplants involve taking hair follicles from the area at the back of the neck (between the ears) and transferring them to the desired areas for beard growth.

Transplants can be performed for areas with no beard hair at all or for areas that need to be thickened. The number of follicles transplanted determines the duration of the procedure. Local anesthesia and sedation are applied for this process. The transplant procedure typically lasts between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the density and area to be treated.
